Grinder vs machine: where to spend first
A R9 000 grinder on a R9 000 machine beats a R2 000 grinder on a R30 000 machine. Here is why, with shots to prove it.

Espresso is a pressure-driven extraction through a bed of very fine particles. The evenness of that bed decides more about the cup than any boiler ever will.
A cheap grinder produces a wide spread of particle sizes. The fines over-extract and turn bitter; the boulders under-extract and turn sour. No machine can fix that after the fact.
Our rule of thumb: spend at least as much on the grinder as on the machine until you pass roughly R15 000 on the grinder. After that, machines start to matter more.
